Bruising stems from broken blood vessels so my guess would be that your wife's blood vessels are closer to the skin surface in her bottom than yours are. Thus, the impacts of hands or paddles have a higher chance of rupturing them. The red skin tone has nothing to do with blood vessels actually breaking. It's just the heating of the skin from the friction of the swats.
