It would be kind of hard to carry it further. In Bizet's opera, and Merimee's story Don Jose fallls in love with Carmen, and she betrays him by leaving him for a Picadero (they stab the bull before the fight to ready him for the matador), and because he has given up his army career for her and become a smuggler, he stabs her to death in a jealous rage. Best to leave the story where it it, I think--LOL!
